What is a compost?

Compost is a process that allows the transformation of organic residues into raw materials for agricultural production. According to FAO, "Composting is the natural process of 'rotting' or decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms under controlled conditions. Raw organic materials such as crop residues, animal wastes, food garbage, some municipal wastes and suitable industrial wastes, enhance their suitability for application to the soil as a fertilizing resource, after having undergone composting".

Why to compost?

  1. Composts return important nutrients to the soil.

  2. In landfills, organic sources produce methane gas which is much more harmful than CO2.

  3. It increases the life cycle of landfills.

  4. Reduces your personal costs as you wont need to buy extra fertilizers!

  5. Reduces municipal costs related to the tranportation of your organic residues to landfills.
